DBA Trends Survey – Part 1 of 3 – General

Everybody loves to fill out surveys. Right?  Ugh I just never found the time to fill em out. But then again I had to send em back using snail mail. You remember snail mail? Right?

But some interesting stats from this research project By Dr. Elliot King

Reference: DBAs FACE NEW CHALLENGES: TREND IN DATABASE ADMINISTRATION

Which relational database management system platforms/brands do you have running in your organization on-premises?
SQL Server 77%
Oracle 69%

Including both relational and non-relational database management platforms, approximately how many different brands of database management systems does your organization support?
1-3 -60%
4+ -40%

What are the most important reasons for using multiple database platforms in your organization? (Multiple responses allowed.)
Performance -72%
Configuration -58%
Maintenance -49%

What is the total amount of structured data in your ON-PREMISES relational database management systems?
1B – 499TB -63%
500TB – <1PB -18%
1PB+ -16%

How fast is the volume of data under management in your ON-PREMISES relational database management systems growing annually?
0 to 25% -57%
>25%=50% -34%
>50%+ – 9%

I was a bit surprised that ONLY 16% of users responding to the survey with 1 PB+ of data. Seems like that would be easy to reach if you are keeping multiple daily, weekly, monthly backups, 7 years of data and source code and databases for testing, QA, pre-deployment, etc.
