Performance Tuning Using Extended Events: Part 3

Davey’s articles offer a great explanation on using SQL Server extended events for performance tuning SQL Server.

Here are some of the highlights of the three articles.

There are 4 relevant SQL Server extended events to identify queries for SQL Server performance tuning:

  • Deadlocks
  • application aborts
  • blocking
  • long running queries

There are 3 common extended event configurations:

  • File size and number of rollover files (max_file_size, max_rollover_files)
  • Losing Event Data (EVENT_RETENTION_MODE)
  • Automatic restart (STARTUP_STATE)

Davey walks through his own custom stored procedure to shred the XML output from the extended event traces. Davey gives an excellent explaination of what to look for each of the 4 relevant SQL Server extended events.

In Part 3, Davey discusses building multiple reports to analyze the results from each of the 4 relevant SQL Server extended events.

Finally, Davey does caution “careful root-cause analysis should be used … before implementing any changes”.

These three articles by Davey are great info on using SQL Server extended events for performance tuning and gets a thumbs up! Davey’s custom SQL code is also downloadable and ready to be used.

DBAs it’s time to learn how to use extended events for performance tuning. Right?
