The Good !!!

During my IT career, I owned an IT consulting company that lasted about 5 years. 5 years is the normal for a small business before folding. And the company did fold! Good, bad and ugly times for sure. Sometimes it was good, bad and ugly on the same day or the same week.

Make no mistake, SQL Server database consulting and database GIG work is BIG business

Here’s a list of some of the GOOD things about being a gig worker, consultant, 1099 worker,  freelancer, contractor, etc.

  • You can choose where to work
  • You can probably do alot of the work at home (research, analysis, project plans , etc.)
• Higher Earnings potential
  • Your hourly rate or project rate is determined by yourself
  • You get paid for overtime hours
  • You can negotiate extra pay for holidays or on-call duties
• Tax Benefits
  • Sep IRA retirement plan has larger limits
    • You can save much more in this type of retirement account vs a 401K employer plan
      • Cannot exceed the lesser of: 25% of the YTD compensation, or $54,000 (2017)
  • Many business expenses are deductible on your tax returns
    • Office Supplies
    • Computer
    • Printer and printer supplies
    • Cell phone
    • Overnight Travel
    • Meals when staying overnight
    • Car mileage or actual amounts for tolls, gas, oil, etc.
